The Lady Vols win the 2008 national championship with a convincing 64-48 win over Stanford to give the Lady Vols their second straight national title and eight overall for Pat Summitt. The Lady Vols struggled at times during the tournament but never broke. Their last second win over LSU in the semifinals will probably become the stuff of legends. Congrats to Coach Summitt and her team on a job well done!

Government to Regulate Passage of Time

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

Lest anyone think we Southerners are the only sports obsessed folks in America, we find this story from New Jersey:

State Sen. Robert Singer wants the NCAA to investigate the Feb. 11 game that Tennessee won 59-58 over Rutgers despite a question over whether the clock expired.

The Republican’s non-binding legislation calls upon the NCAA to investigate why the game clock seemed to pause for more than a second just before reaching zero. Tennessee had time for Nicky Anosike to make two foul shots to win.

Somehow, when they were drafting their Constitution, I don’t think the founders of New Jersey had this in mind.

Quote of the Day

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Rich Haley ponders why Tennessee head football coach Philip Fulmer is paid more than basketball coach Bruce Pearl:

Pearl leads his Vols to a #1 ranking in the upcoming AP poll.

Fulmer leads the nation as well, but only in number of players he’s had arrested.

I guess that’s why he gets paid so much. He needs the money to bail his team out of jail.

#1 Here We Come

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

#2 Tennessee defeats #1 Memphis, 66-62, in an instant classic. What was only an obscure in-state rivalry a few years ago became the biggest game in the nation. It’s amazing how much Bruce Pearl has accomplished at Tennessee. Vol fans will be talking about this one for years to come.

Champion Versus Champion

Saturday, February 9th, 2008

It’s on. August 30, 2008. Three time defending FCS champion Appalachian State will take on defending FBS champion LSU in Baton Rouge. Can the Mountaineers repeat what they did at Michigan? I wouldn’t bet against them.

Giants Win Super Bowl

Monday, February 4th, 2008

Congrats to Eli Manning and the New York Giants, who defeated the New England Patriots 17-14. The Patriots are looking at the first ever disappointing 18-1 season.

App Gets Some Respect

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

AppFan points out that Appalachian State received some votes in the final AP top 25 poll. If I’m not mistaken, Appalachian is the first ever FCS/Division 1-AA team to do so.

This gets my vote for game of the year:
