Stem Cells

You’ve probably heard that the Senate voted to allow an expansion of stem cell research, and that President Bush has promised to veto it. The vote was 63-37, four votes short of the number needed to override a veto.

I have mixed feelings about this. As someone who is pro-life, I obviously am opposed to the destruction of embryos. But the simple reality is that abortions happen everyday. It’s also true that there are many frozen embryos that will otherwise be destroyed. I wish this was not the case, but it is. So it would seem to me that allowing these to be used for research would allow at least some good to come from tragedy. Creating fetuses only to be destroyed obviously is wrong, and only a fanatic could support this.

I’ll admit that I’m not an expert in this field by any stretch of the imagination. I have no idea if stem cell research will be of medical value. But neither does anyone else; that is why research is done. Feel free to post comments, I’d love to hear about everyone else’s thoughts on the subject.
