While I Was Away

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2005

A few noteworthy events happened while I was away…

* President Bush announced his nominee to replace Sandra Day O’Connor on the Supreme Court: Judge John Roberts. This decision has set off diverse reactions, ranging from disappointment (Ann Coulter and Ben Shapiro) to celebration (Brent Bozell and Rich Lowry). So who is right? Unfortunately, no one knows. We’re just going to have to wait and see.

* South Knox Bubba is no more. Like most bloggers, I was sad to see him go. His uniquely Knoxvillian blog was quite legendary, and though I didn’t agree with him very often, I always read it. So long, SKB!

* The Rocky Top Brigade has moved to a new locale. Thanks to SayUncle for keeping the RTB alive!

* The blogosphere seems to be having a major impact on the 2006 Senate race. In addition to Blogging for Bryant and Harold Ford, Jr. for U.S. Senate 2006 blog, a Bob Corker blog has also been launched: Conservatives for Corker (via Adam Groves). Meanwhile, Democratic candidate Rosalind Kurita has made use of blogs in her campaign as well. The future is here, kids!

* Sen. Bill Frist and President Bush’s division on the issue of stem cell research has been making headlines lately. My question is why? Frist’s position has always been in support of using unwanted embryos for research, while being opposed to creating embryos simply for destruction. Pro-life opponents of stem cell research have lambasted Frist, accusing him of political posturing for his presidential run in 2008, but I don’t think so. While some polls show that a slim majority of Republicans agree with him, those that do not are very vocal, and are much more likely to vote based on that issue, particularly in GOP primaries. No, I think that this is a deeply held conviction on Frist’s part, and I respect him for articulating it.

That’s all for now… Stay tuned!

Finally Home

Monday, August 1st, 2005

Yes, after two weeks, 16 states, 2 provinces, 2 nations, and nearly 3,900 miles, my vacation is over. It was fun while it lasted! I’ll close with a few photos I took this morning at the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond.
